with so many sci-fi movies being announced, our thirst for technological progress will never be quenched. From the Batmans, to the Ironmans, to the G. I. Joes, the gadgets they have been using are simply mesmerizing. And this hasn’t just happened. Right since the time when Star Trek and Back to the Future were released, these movies presented an escape route from the real world to us dreamers. Sony announces the HDR-GW77V, a rugged Handycam

As far as Handycams go, they are not really linked with the notion that they can be rugged and are meant for the outdoorsy adventurous folk of the world. People with interests in mountain climbing, water sports and other adventure sports would usually have to contend with a rugged point and shoot camera or a housing that will allow a camera to be used underwater while video recording. It appears that Sony has taken these concerns into consideration and has announced the HDR-G77V Handycam.

Samsung’s venture into the tablet market has been somewhat dull and overshadowed by their arch rival Apple and their ever so popular iPad and its various updates along the line. However their Galaxy Tab 10.1 and those that followed were hit hard and circled with controversy and riddled with lawsuits in Australia and Europe thanks to Apple’s efforts. Samsung’s not a company to take it sitting down so naturally, amidst the lawsuits, they readied their next gen tablet device i.e. the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. 

Angry Birds Space for Android may contain malware

ngry Birds Space is quite the hit, it reached 10 million downloads in the first three days alone. Users may be in such a frenzy to get the game, that they may have even bought it from unofficial sources, particularly those users with Android smart devices. According to ablog post on security firm, Sophos' Naked Security page, Android users who have downloaded Angry Birds Space from unofficial Android markets are at a risk of malware on their devices. Sophos says that the version of Angry Birds Space, which is in the official Android Market (which is now Google Play) is not affected at all. They haven't noted whether the version available on the Amazon App Store is unaffected or not, however, given that the Amazon App Store is an official Android store, Angry Birds Space in that store, too, should be unaffected.

2 million Lumia handsets sold in Q1; device sales and services hit by competition

okia has provided preliminary information on certain aspects of their first quarter 2012 financial performance, including a lowered first quarter 2012 outlook for devices and services. During the first quarter 2012, multiple factors negatively affected Nokia's devices and services business to a greater extent than previously expected. These factors included:

• Competitive industry dynamics, which negatively affected net sales in the mobile phones and smart devices business units, particularly in India, the Middle East and Africa and China; and
• Gross margin declines, particularly in the smart devices business unit.
  The impact of these factors on the non-IFRS Devices and Services operating margin in the first quarter 2012 was partially offset by a significant benefit from lower warranty costs. Nokia has estimated that its non-IFRS Devices and Services operating margin in the first quarter 2012 was approximately negative 3 percent, compared to the previously expected range of "around breakeven, ranging either above or below by approximately 2 percentage points" primarily due to the factors noted above.
  
  
  
  
  However, the company is expecting a better show in the second quarter of 2012. "Our disappointing Devices & Services first quarter 2012 financial results and outlook for the second quarter 2012 illustrates that our Devices & Services business continues to be in the midst of transition," said Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia. "Within our Smart Devices business unit, we have established early momentum with Lumia, and we are increasing our investments in Lumia to achieve market success. Our operator and distributor partners are providing solid support for Windows Phone as a third ecosystem, as evidenced most recently by the launch of the Lumia 900 by AT&T in the United States."
  
  
  In the first quarter 2012, Nokia sold more than 2 million Lumia devices. The Windows Phone ecosystem has also attracted more developers and has expanded rapidly with more than 80,000 applications available. Nokia will provide the full first quarter results and more details when it reports its first quarter 2012 results on April 19, 2012. However, from this brief it can definitely be concluded that the company is still in transition, but the future could still be bright.

Norton offers free tool to remove Flashback Trojan on Mac

Apple’s Mac platform has a reputation for being safe from security threats over the years; however, last week’s news of the Flashback Trojan has put Mac users on high alert. This malicious software (“malware”) poses as a common plug-in for Internet browsers, and is capable of stealing passwords and personal information. Reports stated that the scope of the threat was more than 600,000 machines. Norton can confirm that the number is trending downward, but as of yesterday, there were approximately 270,000 machines still infected. The vast majority of these infections are in the U.S. In order to safeguard your machines, Norton has released a tool to get rid of it, other than Apple releasing their own patch.

“The Flashback Trojan is a wake-up call for everyone who’s online – no matter what platform or device they use,” said Norton Internet Safety Advocate Marian Merritt. “No operating system is immune to malware attack and whether you’re using a PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone, you should have security precautions in place. For example, anyone running a current version of Norton security software was already protected against this Trojan.” According to Norton’s data, 270,000 Mac users were infected, quite contrary to their belief till then, that the scope of threat was slipping. This Trojan affects Mac users and is capable of stealing passwords and other data.

WP Tango to need only 256 MB of RAM

The upcoming version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, Windows Phone Tango is set to come in Q2, this year and guess what – instead of upping the minimum requirements, they’re seemingly going easy on the specs front. As reported by the Verge, Tango will support just 256 MB of RAM, as compared to the 512 MB, that’s there for current gen devices.

Microsoft announces three editions of Windows 8

Microsoft, via their Windows Team Blog, has announced three new versions of their much anticipated Windows 8 operating system. With Windows 8, Microsoft aims to give users the flexibility they need, whether they are on an x86/64 or a WOA PC. They can now use a touch screen or a keyboard and mouse, and switch anytime. Its fast and fluid design aims to encapsulate a wide range of hardware. Also, they have also revamped the Windows Store for downloading apps and games. All the editions of Windows 8 aim to offer a no-compromise experience. Here’s a quick brief on what the three editions aim to provide.

First, Windows 8 is the official product name for the next x86/64 editions of Windows. For PCs and tablets powered by x86 processors (both, 32 and 64 bit), there will be two editions: Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. For most consumers, Windows 8 will be the right choice. It will include all the features mentioned above plus an updated Windows Explorer, Task Manager, better multi-monitor support and the ability to switch languages on the fly, which was previously only available in Enterprise/Ultimate editions of Windows. For China and a small set of select emerging markets, Microsoft will offer a local language-only edition of Windows 8.

Windows 8 Pro is designed to help tech enthusiasts and business/technical professionals obtain a broader set of Windows 8 technologies. It includes all the features in Windows 8 plus features for encryption, virtualization, PC management and domain connectivity. Windows Media Center will be available as an economical “media pack” add-on to Windows 8 Pro. If you are an enthusiast or you want to use your PC in a business environment, you will most likely want Windows 8 Pro.

Windows RT is the newest member of the Windows family, also known as Windows on ARM or WOA, as mentioned previously. This single edition will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors and will help enable new thin and lightweight form factors with better battery life. Windows RT will include touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. For new apps, the focus for Windows RT is development on the new Windows Runtime, or WinRT, which was unveiled in September and forms the foundation of a new generation of cloud-enabled, touch-enabled, web-connected apps across all genres. 

Pricing and availability have not been mentioned as of now, but more information is certain to be divulged in the coming months, so stay tuned to this space.

PlayStation Vita

Unveiled to the world as the NGP (Next Generation Portable), Sony’s successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP), now called the PS Vita was officially announced at E3 2011. Even though no concrete release date was announced by Sony, the console is expected to hit stores towards the end of the year. 


The PS Vita will be available in two versions: Wi-Fi and 3G. The Wi-Fi version would sell at around $249 (Rs. 11,129) while the 3G version will set you back by $299 (Rs. 13,365). Even though a concrete release date has not been announced by Sony, the PS Vita is expected to ship across America by the end of the year.
